A: We use the metric system to calculate the volume in cubic metres and the weight in metric tonnes. We divide the volume of the unit by 2.5 and use either the weight or measure figure, whichever produces the highest revenue per unit. This will give you the revenue tonnes.
Multiply the revenue tonnes by the applicable rate (i.e. region or destination) then you will have the estimated cost for the transportation.
NB: The premium for insurance is extra.
Examples to estimate the cost of transportation
You can estimate the cost by using the following formula:
Vehicles (snowmobile, automobile, pick up, etc ..) are billed based on their volumes.
The average pick-up measures about 5.80 m x 2 m x 2 m = 23.2 cubic metres (m3)
23.2 m3 ÷ 2.5 = 9.28 revenue tonnes
You then multiply the revenue tonnes by the rate for a given destination:
9.28 revenue tonnes x $380.39 (rate for Kuujjuaq) = $3,530.02
The volume of a snowmobile is approximately 4 cubic metres (m3)
4 m3 ÷ 2.5 = 1.6 revenue tonnes
1.6 revenue tonnes x $283.58 (rate for Iqaluit) = $453.73
NB: The billing is based on the rates published on this website and also based on weight or volume whichever yields the highest revenue per unit.
One revenue tonne = 1,000 kilos or 2.5 cubic metres
